What it does: Tally delivers business management software solutions to small and medium enterprises.

Best known for: More than 2 million businesses worldwide use Tally’s products and services.

Staff stats: Over 800 employees

Financials: INR5 billion in revenue for 2018-2019

The good bits: Tally became one of the 15 best employers in India in 2020, partly because of its competitive benefits package and flexible work environment.

The not-so-good bits: The company whittles down applicants very extensively, sometimes hiring only 30% of shortlisted candidates.

The Tally story

Tally used to be known as Peutronics, a joint venture established in 1986 between Shyam Sundar Goenka and Bharat Goenka. The father-and-son duo drew inspiration for Tally from a desire to use automated yet user-friendly accounting software.

By 1999, Peutronics rebranded as Tally Solutions. The company has launched several products since then, including TallyPrime, TallyPrime Server, and TallyPrime Developer.

Tally claims that more than 4.8 million users trust their products and services. Over 800 employees work at 20 locations in India, and international offices in Kenya and the U.A.E.

The culture

Tally’s culture shares similarities with other employers in India by saying that ‘our strength is our people. The company made a name for itself when it won the ‘Kincentric Best Employer India 2020’ recognition. The award ranked Tally among 15 of the best employers in the country.

Insiders attest to the award’s significance because of a ‘great emphasis on self-development. The flexible work policy also allows employees to achieve a healthy work-life balance.

Freshers should remember that flexibility and self-development can be subjective. For example, an employee in the engineering department may have a work schedule that’s less desirable than someone in HR.

The competition

Tally’s direct and indirect competitors include Infosys, Wipro, Zensar Technologies, and Zoho.

Social contributions

The company launched TallyTogether in 2014 as its corporate social responsibility program. It focuses on four key areas:

  • Education and vocation

  • Environment and conservation

  • Equality and empowerment

  • Nutrition and healthcare

The most prominent projects included makeshift hospitals and temporary COVID-19 care facilities. Tally also spent CSR funds on building medical oxygen generation and storage plants.

The vibe of the place

Tally has become an established business software solutions provider without losing its identity as a family-run company. New hires are more likely to succeed in their roles if they are fond of working in a tight-knit environment

Recruitment Process

Freshers should anticipate up to four steps for the general hiring process at Tally: aptitude/personality test and two to three rounds of interviews.

Aptitude/personality test

Tally evaluates a candidate’s aptitude and personality by asking about their analytical and logical skills. If it’s a tech role, the company will require them to pass a coding test.

First interview

The initial interview digs deeper into an applicant’s desire to work for Tally. Insiders said that candidates should spontaneously think of convincing answers, as many have failed to advance to the next stage.

Second interview

In some cases, Tally may conduct this round through a group discussion instead of an interview. This is also an elimination round.

Third interview

The third interview will involve a lot of technical questions related to the position (eg coding for software engineering roles).

Fourth interview

If Tally decides to schedule another interview, this round will involve basic HR questions. The company usually takes four weeks to select candidates. Previous applicants revealed a low ratio of acceptance.

For example, only five out of 17 shortlisted applicants successfully clinched a job offer from Tally.

Remuneration & Career Growth

Career prospects

Insiders cited Tally’s company size as the biggest advantage for a fresher’s career growth, especially for tech graduates.

Tally allows freshers to take on significant responsibilities to gain experience. Some of these tasks are otherwise reserved for senior employees at large IT companies in India.

Freshers can explore a career path at Tally’s seven departments:

  • Business development (India and international operations)

  • Corporate finance

  • Corporate information system

  • Engineering

  • Human resources

  • Marketing

  • Product management

Software engineers and other tech employees at the company tend to have more chances for lateral movement. Some of these opportunities include working in design before moving to development and deployment.

Remuneration

The average fresher salary at Tally amounts to INR900,000 per year, but the actual rate can be higher or lower. Inexperienced software engineers, including trainees, earn between INR700,000 and INR830,000 per year.

Non-tech roles such as accountants earn an average salary ranging from INR160,000 to INR180,000. While the figures aren’t as appealing as salaries from big software companies, Tally offers a comprehensive benefits package:

  • Business travel perks

  • Conveyance reimbursement

  • Extensive leave policy

  • Loyalty pay

  • Mediclaim and OPD shield for dependents

  • Mobile and internet subsidies

  • Tuition assistance
