Culture at Energy Queensland

8.0
8.0 rating for Culture, based on 13 reviews
Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
Culture has been fantastic. Almost everyone is welcoming and friendly. Everyone in my teams as a graduate have been supportive and helpful and everyone appears to work well as a team and across teams for the best outcome of the business. Even managers and general managers are supportive ands friendly giving you time to discuss things and work through solutions.

I find the culture at EQL to be exceptionally inclusive and supportive. There are opportunities for socializing both inside and outside the business, so the workplace inclusivity extends beyond the workplace. This makes everyone feel welcomed and fosters a sense of belonging. Additionally, the sense of unity and a shared commitment to our goals is evident in the way we tackle projects and solve challenges, which contributes to an enjoyable work environment.

Very large organisation so there is a big hierarchy. Generally as grads we have little interaction with senior leaders, but when you do meet them they are very open to having a conversation. Amongst peers, there is a lot of interaction & socialising with others based in the same location (i.e., same city) but harder to socialise across the state. Some activities to increase this but still a work in progress. I have always felt my direct team & supervisor to be very helpful and collaborative, and always felt confident to speak up & ask questions where needed. I also feel like I am part of the team, even when rotating into a new team.

Large government organisations. Things move slow but you still have the freedom to make change on a personal or team level if you are motivated. Each team performs specific tasks depending on their focus area (e.g. planning, protection, or design). This causes some level of siloing in some (but not all) teams as they may not interact with other teams very often. Office culture is professional in my experience. I have heard it varies by team. I cannot comment on the culture in field teams as I have not experience that yet. Most people I have worked with are more than happy to help a graduate out. Having the "graduate" label gives you the ability to ask questions and ask for help. There is no Friday culture among the Brisbane grads but you often find grads having lunch together.

Fairly hierarchical. Though I have been able to learn and have meetings even with the more technically focused managers. Strong foundational teamwork with regular meets and constant access to communication.

General culture at EQL is lacklustre - not many social events or encouragement to interact. Within my team and with other graduates the culture is great, with the occasional after-work event organised.

The culture at EQL isn't bad, but it could be better. Different teams believe they are better and hold higher regard than others which can cause problems and deteriorate relationships. Within teams however, the culture seems to be fairly good. Constructive conversations can be had where differing opinions are raised, but ultimately a unanimous decision is arrived at. This idea is similar for cooperation and teamwork; within teams it seems to be positive. The after hours culture seems to be very positive at EQL. Employees get along very well after hours at events with members from within their team, but also other teams.

My team's culture is welcoming and inclusive. The team has a lot of work to do with the decarbonisation of 33 power stations, however, always finds time socialise and joke around as well. The team has members with extensive experience in different areas of electrical engineering and are always ready to mentor others. The company culture is also big on socialising and building relationships outside of work as well which is nice.

There is 2 sides of this topic. On one hand there are some great areas for workplace culture where there is plenty of respect and direction in hierarchy and good support and teamwork. On the other hand there are some parts of the company that have some less than desirable culture where if you are not part of the "in crowd" you are excluded and even bullied in some instances.
