The Ericsson Story

The history of Ericsson begins in 1876, when Lars Magnus Ericsson, a Swedish engineer, and inventor, set up a telephone factory and workshop in Stockholm. The company was known as "Triumphbolaget". In 1884 the company started manufacturing telephones for the Danish market and in 1887 for the Swedish market. In 1886, Ericsson began manufacturing telephones for the German market. During this period, the company's factory was located at Chai Wan in Hong Kong.

Telephone equipment was developed by many companies, including Edison Telephone Company and Western Electric Co., which later became AT&T Corporation. In 1898, Ericsson acquired all rights to manufacture Bell telephones outside North America from American Bell Telephone Co., an American manufacturer of phones. This gave Ericsson an international market share of 20%.
