The Philips Story

Philips & Co was founded in the year 1891 in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, by Frederik Philips and his son, Gerard. Soon, through the interest of his son in engineering science, they both developed a bold but timely plan that is cost-effective and reliable for electric incandescent light bulbs. In the early 1900s, their business began to expand to the point where they could hire about 2,000 employees for the company. Gerard and his brother Anton invested in providing housing, healthcare, and sports, inculcating a culture of social responsibility that continues to this day.

The first Philips research laboratory, known as "Philips Nat Lab," was set up in the year 1914, which led to the innovation of products. Dr Gilles Holst had an aspiration for research, while its breakthroughs in X-ray tubes ultimately marked the origin of Philips' involvement in health technology. During the 1920s, it became a leader in designing products. From 1930 till today, over some 130 years, the company has excelled in its innovation and become a world leader in health care.
