In 2004, Lenovo took over the personal computer business of IBM. In 2014 its market share in PCs was 17%, making it the world's largest personal computer vendor by unit sales. Lenovo has been expanding into the smartphone market since 2012 when it acquired Motorola Mobility from Google and continues to be one of the largest phone makers due to its purchase of Motorola Mobility. In 2018, it became the biggest smartphone vendor by shipments.
