Manavi Marnad

An internship is the first entry point to the corporate world to get an idea of everything about the corporate working style and a great opportunity to check if the particular domain is your cup of tea or not.

I am a 3rd-year B. Tech student pursuing my major in computer science from the Usha Mittal Institute of Technology. I had PCMB in my +2 but later I decided that the domain of engineering would be fine for me and took admitted to the computer science domain. I am having a good time at my college with lots of learning.

How did you get this internship role?

I am a firm believer in the fact that JP Morgan is a technology company in the finance sector since they are investing so much of their resources in technology to improve their financial services. The selection is a 24 hours hackathon that tests your different skills and how efficiently you can complete the project. During these 24 hours, interview rounds are included so you need to be prepared for any kind of question about your project and yourself.

What is your general advice for people looking for internships?

I think someone who is confused about whether his or her domain of summer internship will be catered to what they are looking for, must do deep research about the job description and talk to people around and make use of LinkedIn. Your seniors are a good source to talk to and eventually you can decide after you enrol in the recruitment process.

What do you think are the skills that one should acquire to crack internships at J.P Morgan?

My communication skill, team player approach and don’t panic attitude helped me to perform well in the 24-hour project and I feel as much as your technical skills are important, your other skills are of the same importance.

How do non-academic projects help in getting good internships and jobs?

I participated in hackathons and at the Myntra hackathon where I worked collaborative shopping made me release the importance of technical skills and from there on I started doing my side projects which really helped me to improvise my hard-core technical skills. I'll suggest others do their own projects to improve their skills in the same manner.

How has your experience been of working with JP Morgan?

I really enjoy working at the office though it's a hybrid still I like going to the office and working there and learning from seniors. It is quite challenging because JP Morgan has its own workflow system, so I am also getting a good taste of the corporate lifestyle. You will have to talk to learn and approach seniors to break your ice and engage in conversation that will really boost your confidence. JP Morgan provides you with a very good amount of stipend from the perspective of a college student and it varies depending on your domain. I am not sure if I am allowed to disclose it so I will skip this. For me what I get as a stipend is really good as apart from the stipend, the internship gives you an experience of a lifetime and its brand value to your CV. Our HR is very helpful and keeps us engaged in many activities to enhance our productivity like webinars, talks with experienced people, etc.

What are your views on how one should see a stipend, and accordingly tell us about what you think could be a good stipend range for a student in college?

A stipend is important but the other factors are also important like you will have to talk to many people and do your proper research about it. I am not sure if such a number. It varies from person to person but good companies do pay well so try for good companies like JP Morgan. I would love to have a PPO because it will be a satisfactory certificate to myself that yes I have performed well. Also, it would be an addition to my self-brand and would help me get a better offer if I choose to go for any other company.

What is the importance of internships for a college student?

An internship is the first entry point to the corporate world to get an idea of everything about the corporate working style and a great opportunity to check if the particular domain is your cup of tea or not.

What suggestions can you give to fresh grads/students who wish to apply for internships or a job?

Make proper use of resources, look for good opportunities, don’t bug out hearing from others, make plans and try sticking to until you have a good company in hand to work for. Making a balance between competitive coding and project-based coding has really helped me.
