The Bayer Story

Bayer was established in 1863 by Johann Friedrich Weskott and Friedrich Bayer. Bayer manufactured the world-famous Aspirin in 1899. That same year, they were the first company to sell heroin as a medication with cough suppressing abilities. During World War 1, the company manufactured chemical weapons and explosives.

The government confiscated their foreign assets, trademarks, and patents. Between 1925 and 1951, the company was incorporated into IG Farben. After World War 2, IG Farben was dissolved into 12 new companies. Bayer became an individual company again.

In 2003, Bayer became a holding company and separated its strategic and operational management. Their core businesses became limited companies. In 2016, Bayer restructured again to emerge as a life science organization. Presently, Bayer is one of the largest employers of labor in Europe and the world as well.
