In 2001, they agreed to a merger deal with Global Trust Bank, but the Reserve Bank of India declined the approval for the deal.

In 2005, the London Stock Exchange listed UTI Bank. The following year, UTI Bank opened its first international branch in Singapore. The next office was in Shanghai, China, in the same year. In 2007, UTI expanded to Dubai with a branch in the Dubai International Financial Centre and opened branches in Hong Kong. In July of that same year, UTI Bank was renamed Axis Bank. Today, Axis Bank is worth several billion dollars. The company had a network of 12922 ATMs and 4096 branches as of August 12, 2016.
